Primary SourceProclamation, by The King for Suppressing Rebellion and Sedition
http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?document=875 King George III wrote a Proclamation claiming that if any person comes across a traitor to the British and the King himself, they most make his name be known. If there is someone who is rebelling against them, he will suffer under the power of the King and his officers. This was made to protect Britain from a rebellion and to keep their society in check. The British were afraid of an uproar that would make them lose control of the colonies. This was a significant factor in history because it was a time where America was fighting back for its freedom. It was also significant because it indicated that the rebels were growing more and more in number which later will lead into the American Revolution. Cathy L |
Primary SourceSalem Witchcraft Trials 1692
http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/salem/ASA_NUR.HTM The Salem Witch Trials were horrific events that occurred during the 1600's in Salem due to poor economic conditions and societal rivalries. The included document is a collection of the petitions and depositions of citizens of Salem regarding the controversy over Rebecca Nurse. Rebecca Nurse was accused of being a witch in Salem because of her odd quirks and because of jealous teenagers trying to make up stories. The testimonies state her innocence along with detailed accusations of actions by Nurse proving she is a witch. The final verdict by jurors convicted Nurse of witchcraft. The significance of this trial was to demonstrate the absurd and disoriented life in the colonies at the time. Also is illustrates the mass obsession with religious life and practice in the New England area; if any objection to the standard Puritan ways arose in New England the said person would be persecuted and damned to hell. Religion was a strong force in the colonies resulting in twenty deaths all due to witch accusations. Tyler F |
Primary SourceThe Fundamental Orders of Connecticut 1639
http://www.let.rug.nl/usa/documents/1600-1650/the-fundamental-orders-of-connecticut-1639.php The document is often credited as being the first written constitution of the New World, however it is debatable due to the fact that the Mayflower Compact was also written around the same time period. It outlines the rules, orders, and decrees of the religious residents of Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield are were at the time occupying the area of Connecticut. Its significance is in the concept of the New World colonists attempting to create a society of liberty and purity. Emily V |
Primary SourceDiary Entry of John Adams Concerning His Involvement in the Boston Massacre Trials
http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/bostonmassacre/diaryentries.html The diary entry by John Adams outlines what his perception was of the things that happened that night and if he thought the soldiers were guilty or not. He tells how he vouched for a couple of the British soldiers on the stand, and talked about the prejudice and judgement he felt as he stepped off. He considered it one of the most gallant acts he ever performed for his country, and equated executing the soldiers to persecution of Quakers and Witches. Adams thinks the soldiers are not guilty, but the night was still a massacre, and the question needs to be asked why were the soldiers out there and who put them their. This is significant because it shows that even though John Adams was a Colonist, against the British, he still defended them and protected their rights. It shows that the colonists vendetta was not big enough to sentence the soldiers to death, but to actually analyze the event from their point of view and realize that it was actually the mother country, not her children that should be blamed, reflected in the verdict.
