Anti-liquor Propaganda: A Study in Rhetoric
During and leading up to the temperance movement and prohibition there were massive amounts of propaganda that was used to outlaw alcohol and prevent its use. Anti-liquor groups were known to use logic, such as facts, statistics, and provable facts to show their point. They also utilized appeals to emotion, which entailed usage of morals and ethics, primarily founded by religious ideas. Prohibition movements coincided with religious fervor in the United States. While logic was used, appeals to morals and ethics were much more popular and widely used that facts or statistics. The significance of this document is that it shows the tactics of anti-liquor proponents in the battle over alcohol. At the time, most prohibitionists were women, as alcohol was perceived as a home wrecker. Thus the use of propaganda became an effective tactic against alcohol, proven by the eventual banning of it. This type of propaganda usage closely resembles advertising. In advertising, logic is used, but very seldom, and usually takes backseat to a play on ethics and morals. This is evidence that the social opinion most likely would not have changed with just logic, emotion was very important. Sean Gibson |
